Oh Hell Yeah! [fist pump, fist pump, belly flop on bed]

I just bought my first concert ticket in a year - Rayon at the Fixin To. Can't wait to check out their new hybrid concert space. Paul and I are to going to have beer, listen to music, stare down at our phones in public places, and NOT BE IN MY HOUSE. All the things we used to do, just with masks.

Looks like a cool set up. See you there?

"LONG STORY SHORT: Bands will perform safely in the venue facing out to the crowd on the patio. Patio will (SOON!) be covered from the rain. Sound will run from the venue into new burly outdoor speakers. The crowd of between 30-40 will wear masks and socially distance and have a killer time! Shows are selling out quickly, so act fast. Concerts will be announced here and on Facebook and Instagram. Can't wait to begin this adventure with ya'll!"

Looking forward to seeing Rayon on Sunday, April 11th.

Also, might have to check out No Year's album release show on Sunday, April 18th.

Jesse's Spring Favorites

Dogheart - Yeah No For Sure
Another great pop album (no. 5!) by this underrated Portland band. I dig their bummed-in-the-sun vibe.

Divers - Live from the Banana Stand
For a brief moment, Divers ruled Portland. Great to have a testament to those awesome shows.

Sego - Sego Sucks
Full of fun, inventive hooks and slackidaisical observations reminiscent of early Beck.

Big Quiet - Interesting Times
Awesome indie pop. Imagine the Bangles signed to Sarah Records.

Layperson - The Divide
Such a beautiful album. Reminds me a bit of the Pernice Brothers.

Months - REX
Spitting political fire wrapped in propulsive, noisy riffs. Cathartic and necessary.

Luther Russell - Medium Cool
O my soul! Come for the Big Star love, stay because this some of the finest powerpop songwriting you'll hear this year.
Live! Friday, June 7th @ Star Theater

Jesse's Early 2019 Jams

Crocodiles - Love Is Here
I love this band. All 7 albums. And this one has a particularly nice blend of sweet and noisy.

Good Shade - Way Out
Just fantastic power pop. A gem in the consistently great Dirtnap Records catalog.

Yuvees - Seething In Whisper Town
One of my favorite tracks from reviewing PDX Pop Now submissions. Great post punk.

Strange Passage - Shouldn't Be Too Long
Teenage Fanclubesque? Upbeat Smiths? IDK. I just love it.

Unlikely Friends - We Blast Last! A Love Letter to the Fabulous Bands of the Pacific Northwest
Happiness is a lovable NW indie pop band covering a new set of local heroes each week. Can't wait to see who's next.

2017 Top 10 Portland Indie Rock Albums

The Autonomics - Debt Sounds
Ignore the Saturday morning Snapchat cover, this is road-honed, pogo-inducing, virile rock n roll.

Sunbathe - Sunbathe

Can't stop listening to these lovelorn and wistful lyrics wrapped in heavenly guitar riffs wavering between surf and shoegaze.
Definitely living up to the legacy of name-checked OG dream poppers Aberdeen and Portland's own Rocketship.

Public Eye - Relaxing Favorites
Propulsive staccato vocals, punchy choruses, and killer riffs easily makes for one of my favorite punk/post punk albums in a while.

Deathlist - Deathlist LP
Textural and melancholy, raw and rhythmic. She is consistently creating and collaborating on many of my favorite songs.

Star Club - Sixth Avenue Motel

Love the sax, love the grimy, sexy mood. Feels like late night, post-punk, beatnik soul. Or something.

Sallie Ford - Soul Sick
Open and vulnerable, she tackles her own mental health and artistic wellness with a familiar bop. So direct and approachable, she makes it seem easy.

Battleme - Cult Psychotica
Seasoning serves them well. Wry observations delivered with a smokers rasp, huge crunchy alt. rock riffs mixed with barroom boogie.

Cardioid - Parts Dept.
A must listen to for Radiation City fans. Same vocals you love, just branching out a bit more. Might even be catchier. Amazing live.

Dogheart - Family Hair
With their relaxed vibe and attention to craft, they’re making a claim for Portland’s masters of mid tempo indie rock.

Jesse's Favorite Albums from 2016

Fully realizing their breathtaking potential. So many layers of art pop awesomeness.

2. Sheer Mag - III

Cranking up this album makes any day feel like Friday night and every beer taste like a High Life.

3. Frightened Rabbit - Painting Of A Panic Attack

Their mastery of celebratory self-loathing is peerless.

4. Candace - New Future

Just packed with killer dreamy shoegaze. And as you'd hope, it's fantastically noisy live.

They draw me in with their popping duets, but deceptively clever in their quirkiness.

6. Pink Mexico - Fool

Buzzing surf pop that is both harder and catchier than the last one you heard. Playing it loud and often.

Two absolutely stunning singles of c86-style indie pop.

A personal & potent EP from the Summer Cannibals' bad ass, renaissance bassist. Easily one of my favorite EPs this year.

9. Minden - Sweet,Simple Things

Their tightest, funkiest, and most dynamic songs to date. And so silky smooth.

10. Holy Vision -King Cash

Binging hard on this shimmering and banging alt. pop. So good.

Libre's buoyant bilingual harmonies inspiring basking in the warm Saturday morning sun. Glad Y La Bamba are back with their gorgeous indie folk.

12. Mo Troper - Beloved

Youthful, testy, and dimed out power pop, reminiscent of Superdrag classics.

13. Augustines - This Is Your Life

Pull me along on their stumbling late night anthems in a way that U2 and their ilk never could. Take a shot, spread your arms, and soar.

14. Lucius - Good Grief

Art pop masters let their identical hairdos down and get noisy.

Long anticipated and stellar collection of slacker surf pop.

16. Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor's Guide to Earth

Driving straight past his Nashville ascendance, this Waylon-loving iconoclast headed west to Memphis for a countrified soul epic.

17. Summer Cannibals- Full Of It

Damn, these songs are explosive. Feeling this righteous anger more than ever.

18. The Record Company - Give It Back to You

Only knock against this great retro soul/blues album is I started rocking half the songs so long ago that they sound fresh again. Luckily, the new songs are some of the best.

19. Photo Ops - Vacation

I hear some Fleet Foxes in these guys, just smelling less of campfire, which could mean they both just build on sweet Beach Boy indebted harmonies.

I dig TV Girl's pursuit of pop alchemy, floating their wry observations over DJ scratches and an organ riff, and punching it all up with sampled hooks. Like adding an indie pop twist to classic singles by the Avalanches or Wiseguys.

2016 Top 10 Portland Indie Rock EPs

1. Deathlist - Deathlist
A personal & potent EP from the Summer Cannibals' bad ass, renaissance bassist. Listened to this EP a ton.

2. Genders - Phone Home
So exciting to hear more from one Portland's best bands.

3. Get Real - Get Real
The soulful vocals pleading over shimmering garage rock just hits my sweet spot.

4. Dogheart - Real Mood
Clear, open and upbeat indie rock, with just a splash of fuzz. Perfect summertime mixtape material.

5. Divers - Achin' On b/w Can't Do That (Dead Moon)
Simply put, a great follow up single to my favorite album last year.

6. Moon Tiger - Moon Tiger
From the opening accordion riff and thundering drums, to the powerful oh oh oooh's, there's nothing subtle about this fun and boisterous party pop.

7. Talkative - F Sharp Voice
Stick a tab on your tongue and hop on board Talkative's interstellar psychedelic pop. I love each hazy layer.

8. Eyelids - Eyelids
Every new Eyelids song is a treat and these covers couldn't be more perfect.

9. Alien Boy - Stay Alive
Sweet melodies buried in muddy shoegaze with just right amount noisy details.

10. Times Infinity - Times Infinity
Their chill, spiraling psychedelia just sucks me in. It just feels good.

2016 Top 10 Portland Indie Rock Albums

Heading out after fully realizing their breathtaking potential. So many layers of awesomeness.

Just packed with killer dreamy shoegaze. And as you'd hope, it's fantastically noisy live.

Damn, these songs are explosive. Feeling this righteous anger more than ever.

Their tightest, funkiest, and most dynamic songs to date. And so silky smooth.

Libre's buoyant bilingual harmonies inspiring basking in the warm Saturday morning sun. Glad Y La Bamba are back with their gorgeous indie folk.

Long anticipated and stellar collection of slacker surf pop.

Kicks off with a killer one-two punch of anxious catchiness.

Messy, boisterous, beer-drenched, and coed - basically, the party you once always aspired to incite. Channeling frustration through harmonized yelling.

What it lacks in fidelity, it makes up for with in-the-red passion and hooks.

Other favorites: Wave Action, Pynnacles, STRFKR, Wooden Indian Burial Ground, Bombay Beach, Thanks...

Top 12 Portland EPs from 2015

Screw albums, EPs are where it's at. Once Again, Portland had a mess of EPs that rocked my world and dominated my stereo. Maybe some of these are technically singles or mini albums. Those are your hang ups, not mine. More than half the bands were new to me and had me desperately wanting more, practically the definition of a great EP. Rejected a top 20, failed at a top 10, settled on a top 12. Hey, it makes for a good mix.

The Tamed West - The Tamed West
So excited about this EP. Love their reverb laden indie rock.

Airport - Heat Flash
From the first chime of guitar this EP targets my indie pop sweet spot, but its the beautiful aching vocals that really nail it.

The Reverberations - Are Outtasite!
"Lost In Time" could easily be their motto. Simply delicious garage rock, just like kind I used to lap up at Slabtown and East End.

The Ghost Ease - Raw
A short blast of an EP, at any and all times, playful, artful, and angry. Sneaks in a great M.I.A. cover at the end. As an added bonus, there's no overlap with the LP!

Cat Hoch - Look What You Found
A rising star standing out in Portland's robust shoegaze/dream pop scene. Love the hazy, spiraling single "Losing It."

Wishyunu - Photoplay
Like a spell, Bei Yan's ethereal vocals and swirling, atmospheric keys wrap around you and draw you in and under.

Patsy’s Rats - Patsy’s Rats EP
Fist pumping power pop for sloshing tallboys, with a celebratory tribute to fallen friend and one time PDX musician.

Is/Is - Return To Zero
A great introduction to their surprising vast and excellent catalog of soaring dream pop and noisy shoe gaze.

Satin Chaps - Stompin’ / Hard Drivin’
Come for the dance floor soul, stay for the sax. Think mid-60s Mar-Keys.

The Furies -  The Furies
Rumor has it, members of the No Tomorrow Boys, Youthbitch, and the Cry! cranked out this catchy rock n' roll EP.

Theme Witch - You Are Wrong EP
Great new bedroom psych pop band.

Wild Ones - Heatwave
Sweet and exquisite pop, swaying along at side of the dance floor.

Awmercy’s Favorite Albums from 2015

Divers - Hello Hello
It’s embarrassing, but this is just the first of three Party Damage Records on my list this year. No label has ever dominated my list like this. Divers mix heartland punk and slow burning indie rock. Rough and passionate, I’m blown away every time I see them.

Sleater-Kinney - No Cities To Love
After ten years off, their anger and politics resonate and inspire me more than ever.

And And And - The Failure
A wonderfully cathartic release of real adult hardship and pain. It hit a nerve and was an immediate favorite and on constant rotation. I think I feel better.

Heat - Rooms EP
Remember what it was like to be 21 and full of piss and swagger? Me neither. Heat are crushing on Lou Reed just as hard as the Strokes did, and sharp enough to pull it off in style.  Ideal for vicarious reminiscing.

Summer Cannibals - Show Us Your Mind
Fully ascended as one of Portland's best rock bands delivering jagged hooks with serious chops, intensity, and attitude. A tight and ferocious live set not to be missed. Crushing hard on this band.

Lost Lander - Medallion
A grandiose pop album, the band striding out onto the dance floor with their fingers still grasping at the stars.

Sheer Mag - II
The blownout lo-fi might deter some, but to me it sounds like that hidden gem on a friend’s overdubbed radio mixtape. Thanks Larson!

Mascaras - Mascara vs. Mascara
With abundant, vital, ephemeral shows, Máscaras owned the blazing Portland summer with their kick ass "maximalist indigenous psych." Also a reminder that great instrumentals can still be tight and concise.

Woolen Men - Temporary Monument
Portland is in transition, with high rises shoot up faster than the rent, conflicting narratives of nostalgia, utopias, equity, and marginalization. Like a snapshot, this album captures that tension, frustration, and confusion.

Barna Howard - Quite A Feeling
Lazy, hot summer afternoons in the garden shade with Barna Howard's gentle country folk songs on stereo.

Big Quiet - Big Quiet
Great summer indie pop album, recalling Sarah and K Records favorites.

Titus Andronicus - The Most Lamentable Tragedy
They come storming back laying it all out there in the open and cracking everything up to eleven on this massive double album punk opera. It’s a lot to take in, but worth it.

Crocodiles - Boys
Recorded in Mexico City, this album adds some new flavors to their already excellent psych pop.

Library Voices - Lovish
The opening line sets the tone: “All of your heroes, they’re all assholes. That don’t mean you should piss on your dreams.” Makes for some excellent world-weary “bastardization of classic rock.”

Courtney Barnett - sometimes i sit and think, and sometimes i just sit
