Jesse’s End of 2020 List

Vinyl - At the beginning of the pandemic we bought a sectional couch and moved the TV into the basement and the record player upstairs. It transformed the room, our evening, and our pandemic lives as my boys were relegated to the basement for video games and movies. Although it quickly became clear that there were some holes in my vinyl collection - notably all my wife’s favorite albums. That obviously had to change.

Comfort Music - With all the shit that went down last year -- and STILL MOTHERFUCKING GOING ON!!!!!! -- I keep falling back on old favorites to get me through the day, raging along to Algiers, family singalongs to the Head and the Heart, drinking to Frightened Rabbit, drinking to Yola, drinking Blitzen Trapper, and running to just about everything, especially classic/retro soul. Apparently, I can run for miles fueled by Otis Redding, Black Pumas, Los Coast, and Benjamin Booker.

Algiers - There Is No Year - Speaking of Algiers, their new album was pure fire, even before 2020 really got going. Along with fellow Atlanteans Run The Jewels, Algiers catalog was at the center of my social justice playlists.

Jeff Rosenstock - NO DREAM - 2020 needed a punk album and was the one for me. Just the right mix of singalong, politics, humor, quiet/loud, and indie structural shifts to make it fun, engaging, and of the moment. Plus, Ellis I love to scream along to the title track.

Sunbathe - Somewhere In Between - I’m a longtime fan of Maggie Morris’ Genders and solo work, and this might be her finest. I just love the rolling reverb soaked wistful and longing lyrics. While she may be tired of drinking her feelings, I certainly needed it to moderate mine. Any other year, I would have gone to all her Portland shows.

DEHD - Flower Of Devotion - A wonderful recommendation from Larson! If I described some of the bonkers vocal hooks, you might not check it out, but just know it’s damn catchy, and it all works. One of a couple socially distant musical connections this year that filled me back up.

Girlhood - Girlhood - A late add that I picked up a brief mention on Hanif Aduraquib’s Instagram, and if I focused on the influences - 90s R&B, Sade, 90s British dance music, I probably won’t have listened, but it is so good. Try not to dance along to the closer!

Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud - First introduced to her one of these end of the year lists and love her last two albums. It’s been on heavy rotation all year.

Sturgill Simpson - Cutting the Grass - At the top of the list in a year full of cover songs and live albums. Although technically not either, the new bluegrass versions bring new life to some of my favorite songs. Maybe in 2020, artists and fans just needed to hear music they already loved a little bit differently.

KaiL Baxley - Beneath The Bones - A delicious mix of soul, gospel, blues and Americana. His smokey vocals pull it all together whether strutting across the floor or hunkering by the campfire. It’s practically soul food for me.

Jesse's Winter Favorites

Algiers - There Is No Year
The soul punk album you need right now. And they're coming to Portland this month!

Eyelids - The Accidental Falls
Top to bottom, their best collection of songs to date. A great album of PDX paisley indie pop.

En Attendant Ana - Juillet
Fantastic indie pop. Fans of Heavenly and Sarah Records need to check them out.

KaiL Baxley - Beneath The Bones
A delicious mix of soul, blues and Americana.

The Orielles - Disco Volador
Taking their experimental pop collages to new heights. Playing Portland the same night as Algiers! WTF! Saturday, March 28 @ Bunk Bar

Jesse's Top 15 Albums from 2017

The Autonomics - Debt Sounds
Ignore the Saturday morning Snapchat cover, this is road-honed, pogo-inducing, virile rock n roll.

Japandroids - Near To The Wild Heart Of Life
Epic, noisy, and their easiest songs to sing along to live.

Sunbathe - Sunbathe
Can't stop listening to these lovelorn and wistful lyrics wrapped in heavenly guitar riffs wavering between surf and shoegaze.

Star Club - Sixth Avenue Motel
Love the sax, love the grimy, sexy mood. Feels like late night, post-punk, beatnik soul. Or something.

Benjamin Booker - Witness
The garage soul album I needed this year. The title track is a masterpiece featuring Mavis Staples.

Sheer Mag - Need to Feel your Love
Oh hell yeah! It’s the power ballads that set this album apart, demonstrating the depths of their chops go well beyond killer riffs cranked up to 11.

Petite League - Rips One Into The Night
Everything I could want in an indie pop album - ridiculously catchy hooks, passionate strumming, kick flips, bite marks…

The Rural Alberta Advantage - The Wild
They got a sound - passionate vocals over an intensely strummed acoustic evoking wide open landscapes, inevitably inducing head nodding, beer sloshing. Yes, I love it.

Matthew Logan Vasquez - Does What He Wants
Plays like a cohesive mix tape, shifting from disco to folk, soul to indie rock, all held together by poignant lyrics delivered with a mischievous smile.

Algiers - The Underside of Power
The first three tracks are pure fire - soul punk politik. It gets weird, skronky, and desolate on Side 2. Staring into the void might be where we are at these days.

Alvvays - Antisocialites
Plimsoll Punks’ dreamy pop slays me - such sweet disdain.

Portugal. The Man - Woodstock
Consistently at the top of my year end lists. Still grappling with rise their to fame, but can’t deny those are some catchy ass singles.

Battleme - Cult Psychotica
Seasoning serves them well. Wry observations delivered with a smokers rasp, huge crunchy alt. rock riffs mixed with barroom boogie.

Heat - Overnight
First album of the year on constant rotation. Perfect follow up to their awesome EP.

Deathlist - Deathlist LP
Textural and melancholy, raw and rhythmic. She is consistently creating and collaborating on many of my favorite songs.

Rain's Top 15 Albums from 2017

Algiers - The Underside Of Power
A much needed kick to the heart, psyche and ass! You know how cool you used to feel listening to the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony on your headphones while you walked down the street? Well, take that feeling and cube it and you've got the idea of what it's like to listen to this album. This sinner's believing what that preacher is delivering. You will too...

Perfume Genius - No Shape
This record makes me see another reality in which I'm not a content man, married for 20+ years to my "soulmate". In that other reality, I'd have a heart/soul rending crush that clearly would never pan out and I'd pine and cry while listening to this album.

Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun
More magick to bless/curse us invoked by the Witch of the Sacramento River.

Gary Numan - Savage (Songs From A Broken World)
It may be time to break out my eyeliner. witch boots, and see through shirt. If Gary's still got it, just maybe I do too...

Future Islands - The Far Field
The appeal of this band, for me, is almost entirely wrapped up in the visual. Do me a favour. Google any live performance and watch it. Now listen to this album. It's like trying to describe a Constantin Brâncuși sculpture or a painting by Odd Nerdrum using just sound and words. You'd be like "huh?" But, once you see them you can't unsee them and then it RULES listening to them...

Diamanda Galás - At Saint Thomas the Apostle Harlem
Like Mama's lullabies.

Elegi - Bansull
Haunted house songs

Alder & Ash - Clutched In The Maw Of The World
Fallen through the frozen lake songs

Godspeed You! Black Emperor! - Luciferian Towers
Jumped out of an airplane without a parachute songs.

Aquaserge - Laisse ca etre
I really miss Stereolab and this scratches many itches. Good for drinking a strong Campari cocktail in the sunshine.

Dale Cooper Quartet and the Dictaphones - Astrild Astrild
With the return of Twin Peaks after 25 years, this timely release keeps the mood weird.

Iceland Symphony Orchestra - Recurrence
Hold your breath. Don't breathe! Pass out. Did you hear this in your stupor?

Jozef van Wissem - Nobody Living Can Ever Make Me Turn Back
Sexy lute!

Slowdive - Slowdive
Aging Shoegazers still gaze at their shoes in beautiful/dreamy fashion. Bravo!

The Caretaker - Everywhere At The End Of Time
A lovely meditation on dementia.
